A prime example of the 'epic theatre' of Bertolt Brecht, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a parable about a girl who steals a baby. The German playwright originally adapted the tale from a 14th century Chinese play, setting the action in rural Georgia, and imposing formalistic and tragicomic elements for an abrasive and political mode of storytelling.
