Figures in Extinction nominated at 2025 Sky Arts Awards

3 Sep 2025

We are delighted to be nominated in the Dance category at this year’s Sky Arts Awards for Figures in Extinction, alongside our co-producers Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT).

Conceived by our Artistic Director Simon McBurney and choreographer Crystal Pite and developed over four years, this trilogy, performed by the astounding NDT 1 dancers, responds to escalating environmental and social collapse, evolving through three interconnected works that fuse dance, spoken word, music and documentary.

Figures in Extinction journeys through themes of ecological loss, human disconnection and collective grief. From a stark catalogue of extinct species to a raw examination of human longing and finally, in the never-before-seen third instalment, a reflection on death and remembrance.

But ultimately, Figures in Extinction offers a glimmer of hope – asking where we might go next, collectively and imaginatively, in the face of crisis.

Launched last year as an evolution of the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, The Sky Arts Awards honours outstanding achievement across a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines. It remains the only event in the world that recognises the full breadth of cultural genres with categories including classical music, comedy, dance, film, literature, poetry, opera, popular music, television, theatre and visual arts.

Winners will be announced at the Sky Arts Awards ceremony on 16 September at The Roundhouse, London. The awards will then be shown the same evening on Sky Arts, Freeview and streaming service NOW.
